Company News >> QLED is a quantum dot OLED or a quantum dot LCD? 19th,Jan,2017
At present, LCD (liquid crystal display) and OLED (organic light emitting diode display) is the display panel of the two schools. In order to compete with OLED, LCD in the use of quantum dot technology to enhance the LCD color saturation. However, there has recently been a new technology called QLED very hot, but also caused more confusion.
QLED details have not been fully disclosed. But IHS believes that QLED in the "Q" on behalf of the quantum dot (Quantum Dot) under the conditions of two technologies are QLED possible. The first possibility is an advanced technology for AMOLED TV panels, which replace organic light-emitting layers with quantum dot materials. The second possibility is the LCD panel with an advanced version of the LED backlight, the use of quantum dots as a color film (Color Filter) material. While the panel light source is still using LED backlight.
In other words, in order to enhance the color saturation, LCD in the backlight part of the use of quantum dot technology; and OLED can also be used quantum dot technology to enhance luminous efficiency.
In the first approach, the AMOLED type would be a fully autonomous light-emitting display, requiring a panel with higher electron mobility than conventional LCD TFTs (liquid crystal thin film transistors). Therefore, the current low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) or oxide (oxide) semiconductor array substrate will replace the traditional TFT backplane. The advantage is that investment costs may be lower than AMOLED.
The second way is to replace the color film with a quantum dot LCD advanced version of the structure, similar to the traditional LCD. It will have the same amorphous silicon TFT, liquid crystal and glass substrate. The only difference is that the color film layer uses quantum dots rather than dyes. As a result, it can be produced in traditional LCD plants, so that equipment transformation and investment can be minimized. At the same time, its color saturation because of the characteristics of quantum dots and excellent.
The second way to invest less, low cost, and the panel picture quality, because the color saturation and contrast. The first way to produce a higher cost. Therefore, the use of quantum dots instead of color LCD layer LCD version seems to be closer to IHS speculation is more likely to develop QLED.
But QLED still has many technical development obstacles. At present, quantum dot materials have not been fully validated for the replacement of color films, and IHS in the new display panel has concluded that the optimized quantum dot structure has not been able to be placed into the panel Open Cell. Polarizers in the LCD panel must also be noted that the top polarizer needs to be placed below the quantum dot layer, that is, inside the LCD panel rather than above it.
For QLED, because it is a quantum dot color film with the so-called LCD advanced version, embedded polarizer has become a necessary condition. IHS that this will become the development process of QLED another major obstacle, but also said that the successful development of the panel manufacturers will have a great technological lead.
