>> MicroLED replaces OLED? Conclusion is a bit early! 22th,March,2018
As far as the competition between QLED and OLED is still fierce, the beginning of this year, MicroLED frequently appeared in public view. After the rumors that Apple has joined the development and manufacture of the Micro LED, it seems that the future shows the direction of the war, but also changed.
Apple was exposed to "secret" research and development
Recently, it was reported that Apple is designing and producing its own display screen in California's R&D and manufacturing facilities. The display is a Micro LED screen. Hundreds of engineers are working on this project, and this technology may be used for Apple Watch.
As soon as the news flowed out, it immediately caused a shock to the panel display industry. Shares of Samsung Display, LG Display, Japan Display, and Sharp declined.
Apple previously acquired LuxVue Technologies, which developed Micro LED display panel technology. In the past ten years, Apple has applied for 11 patents related to Micro LEDs. LuxVue applied for 23 patents, which means that Apple has a total of 34 patents for MicroLEDs.
Kim Jong-chan, head of the Display Panel Division of the Korea Intellectual Property Office, publicly stated that Apple’s application to the Korean government for these patents is because South Korea has two giant display panels, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, and two Korean companies may The MicroLED display will be used in the device.
In fact, after the acquisition was completed, Apple aimed at the Micro LED. However, due to the difficulties in implementing this technology, the plan was shelved.
At present, Apple has not made a public response to this news.
Is considered the ultimate LED
Micro LED is considered as the ultimate LED in the industry. Like OLED, it is composed of light-emitting diodes. Both of them are “self-luminous”. They can provide the same contrast and color performance as OLED, and they are also as light and thin.
Due to the difference in the materials of the two, in theory, the Micro LED may have better performance than the OLED in brightness, response speed, contrast, and color saturation. In terms of display density, the Micro LED can further break through. Theoretically, if the Micro LED is used on the iPhone 8, the display density can reach 1500ppi or more.
In actual use, OLEDs must reduce white screens and highlights in order to achieve power savings. Micro LEDs can be 90% lower than LCDs and 50% lower than OLEDs in terms of power consumption.
Giants have stepped in
In fact, this year's CES show, Samsung introduced the world's first MicroLED TV "The Wall", which is a 146-inch modular TV, using MicroLED technology, has amazing clarity and is not subject to size, resolution or shape limits.
Last month, Samsung denied that it would return to the OLED large-screen area. This means that Samsung will continue to focus on QLEDs and Micro LEDs in the future.
At the same time, the sources pointed out that LG Electronics executives visited the TV business unit in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province on February 21 and pointed out that before September of this year, Micro LED that is larger than Samsung Electronics’s The Wall TV should be prepared. For TV, LG Electronics plans to use the LG Innotek Micro LED.
Giant BOE of domestic panel industry has joined the research and development of Micro LED. On March 15th, BOE stated on the investor interaction platform that at present, the company has carried out technical research on Micro LED and made certain progress.
Mass production is still difficult
For a long time, Apple has not been able to control its "fate" on the screen.
Currently, in the field of small and medium-sized OLED screens, Samsung is the absolute leader, and in the field of large-size OLED screens, LG is the gimmick.
It is reported that Samsung's OLED screen yields Apple's mobile phone yield is only 60%, which directly affects the processing of Apple's mobile phone manufacturing, and ultimately restricted the shipments, at the same time, in the price control, Apple also in the screen section Underdogs, this makes Apple "depressed."
However, even if Apple wants to overtake the corners of the Micro LED, it will not be easy to go beyond the current oligarchs of the panel display industry and realize its own screen. It may be difficult to achieve in the short term.
The essence of MicroLED is the miniature array of LEDs, which directly determines its extremely high technical difficulty.
Panel display industry technicians pointed out to reporters that Micro LED components should be smaller than 100 micrometers. The difficulty in production is how to transfer and paste millions of tiny LED components into a single panel, thereby improving the yield of large-size panels.
The placement accuracy of these tiny LED components is 1.5μm. With a small panel size, monolithic RGB LED chips require higher processing technology and materials on the same wafer material, and ultra-high-density Packaging technology.
Research company TrendForce's LED inside analysis, MicroLED TV costs much higher than the traditional LCD or OLED TV, the current LCD and OLED costs have been able to pressure consumer acceptance, but Micro LED TV is difficult.
At present, Samsung, which has already exhibited the world's first Micro LED TV, has not announced the exact timing for the launch of the Micro LED.
