Company News >> Curved LCD panel: Can the battle against OLED win? 27th,March,2019
——The OLED TVs launched by Samsung and LG have attracted a lot of attention from the industry due to the curved surface design. It is also such a curved surface design that has always been the “soft rib” of liquid crystal. In recent years, the topic of OLEDs replacing liquid crystals is endless. In order to prolong life, liquid crystals have also launched a counterattack. Recently, after Sony successfully mass-produced curved LCD TVs, Changhong also announced that it will mass produce the first curved LCD TV in China in the fourth quarter, with the intention of making a difference in the field of curved LCD TVs. However, objectively speaking, the design of the curved surface is not the strength of the liquid crystal. Can the curved LCD TV break through the barriers and shoulder the burden of OLED?

Technical barriers exist for curved liquid crystals

There are many technical challenges in the process of curved liquid crystal panels, but the introduction of ultra-thin glass substrates can also achieve the effect of curved surfaces.

After the spherical design of the CRT, in the LCD era, color TV began to popularize the beauty of the plane. For more than 10 years, the design of LCD TVs has been dominated by planes, and such designs have gradually become ingrained in the minds of consumers. In 2013, the appearance of curved LCD TVs subverted the traditional TV design, and the curved LCD screen is indeed eye-catching.

In fact, it is not easy to achieve a curved surface design on a liquid crystal screen. Zhu Changchang, deputy chief engineer of TCL Group Industrial Research Institute, told the reporter: "The difficulty in producing curved LCD screens is that glass and backlights are not easy to bend. Because glass is thin, it is difficult to achieve bending. If the LCD screen is not bent, And the size of the TV is right, then the light source bending is also achievable. However, TCL has no plans to make a curved LCD screen for the time being."

LCD TV screens have always used flat design, the main reason is that the technical threshold is relatively high. In addition to the problems of glass and backlight, the image quality at the edge of the curved LCD screen is distorted due to the mismatch between the TFT and the color filter pixels, causing a problem of viewing angle. In addition, polarizer attaching and FPCB (soft printed circuit board) also require the development of new engineering techniques. Although there are many technical challenges, the introduction of ultra-thin glass substrates, liquid crystal panels can also achieve the effect of curved surfaces.

In recent years, panel companies have carried out extensive research and development in the field of curved liquid crystals. Among them, AUO and Samsung have produced curved LCD panels and have cooperated closely with Sony and Changhong. The reporter learned that Sony's already-selling curved LCD TV screens are mainly from AUO. Sony's new 65-inch TV also uses AUO's 100% color gamut 4K curved LCD panel; while Changhong curved TV screen is provided by AUO and Samsung. In addition to LCD panel manufacturers, upstream supporting companies are constantly developing new technologies. In June last year, Corning has provided samples of bendable glass to manufacturers of mobile phones, tablets and televisions.
