Company News >> Will OLED TVs be defeated and replaced by Mini LEDs? 13th,April,2021
In recent years, the market situation of LCD TVs is not optimistic. The price of LCD TVs has fallen all the way, causing TV manufacturers' already meager profits to be squeezed again. It was not until the second half of 2020 that the price of LCD panels began to bottom out, and TV manufacturers had to increase the price of LCD TVs, and the price of LCD TVs finally broke the freezing point for several years.

In fact, in order to break the situation of low-price competition, major TV manufacturers have been exploring differentiated product strategies. For example, around screen display, TVs with different technologies such as OLED, ULED, QLED, and Mini LED have been derived: TCL Electronics, Samsung Electronics By adding quantum dot film to improve the color gamut and brightness of LCD TVs, QLED TVs will be promoted to the high-end TV market; Hisense has improved the image quality of LCD TVs by improving LED backlight technology, creating ULED TVs with independent technology. Because QLED TVs and ULED TVs are only sold by individual manufacturers, these two TVs have not become popular.

In contrast, Mini LED TVs are much more popular. This year, following Skyworth’s official release of Mini LED-backlit TVs, Samsung also recently launched a Mini LED-backlit Neo QLED TV. In addition, TCL Electronics and LG Electronics are also in full swing preparing to release OD ZeroTM Mini LED-backlit TVs and QNED TVs. Seeing that Mini LED-backlit LCD TVs are becoming more and more popular among TV manufacturers, under this circumstance, will OLED TVs be defeated and replaced by Mini LEDs?

Big impact: Mini LED-backlit TVs surpass OLED TVs

With the influx of a large number of TV manufacturers, the Mini LED backlight TV market has achieved explosive growth. According to data from Aowei Cloud Network, in 2020, the global sales of Mini LED backlight TVs are only 200,000 units, and sales are expected to increase to 4.4 million units in 2021, and even exceed 35.5 million units in 2025.

OLED TVs, which are often compared with Mini LED-backlit TVs, have taken 8 years to produce less than 4 million OLED TVs annually. In 2020, the global shipments of OLED TVs will be only 36.52 million. Mini LED backlight TV sales may climb from 200,000 units to 4.4 million units in just one year, and the OLED TV market is facing unprecedented threats.

In order to combat Mini LED-backlit TVs, LG Display, the world's only OLED TV panel manufacturer, has taken a three-pronged approach to further enhance the differentiated competitiveness of OLED TV panels. First, LGD uses newly developed organic light-emitting devices to further enhance the brightness of OLED TV panels, increasing the luminous efficiency of 77-inch OLED panels by about 20%.Secondly, LGD adopts a diversified size strategy. On the basis of the 88-inch OLED panel, 48-inch and 83-inch OLED panels were added; finally, LGD used the killer trick of curling, launching a rollable OLED TV, making Mini LED backlit TVs beyond the reach. At the same time, in order to avoid the impact of Mini LED-backlit TVs, LG Electronics actively reduced the price of 55-inch and 65-inch OLED TVs by 20% to promote OLED TV sales.

Big upgrade: Mini LED backlight TV catches up with OLED products

From a technical point of view, Mini LED-backlit TVs make up for the inherent disadvantage of LCD TVs with low contrast ratios, improve the brightness of LCD TVs, and have lower power consumption, more resistance to high and low temperatures, and longer life span. This is the inevitable development trend of LCD TVs. Therefore, big-name TV manufacturers such as Samsung, TCL, Skyworth, and LG have all entered the Mini LED backlight TV camp.

In February of this year, Skyworth released 75-inch and 86-inch MiniLED TVs with a contrast ratio of 1 million:1, which means that the blacks in the picture are blacker and the whites are whiter, which can retain more picture details. In addition, Skyworth MiniLED TV also introduces quantum dot technology to make the color gamut reach 100% (NTSC 1931) and the peak brightness of the screen is 1500nits.

At the beginning of March, Samsung Neo QLED TVs with Neo quantum dot processors and new quantum dot Mini LEDs went on the market. Neo QLED TV surpasses Samsung's previous similar products in terms of color, brightness and image enhancement. On March 9, TCL Electronics also released an LCD TV equipped with OD ZeroTM Mini-LED technology. This TV has the characteristics of wide color gamut, high contrast, smooth and uniform color, and the optical distance between the Mini-LED backlight layer and the LCD display layer is even Reach 0mm.

In mid-April, LG Electronics will launch Mini LED TVs-QNED TVs. The 85-inch 8K QNED TV LED backlight has 30,000 Mini LEDs and 2500 partitions to control the light, which greatly improves the brightness and contrast.

In addition to the above-mentioned manufacturers, TV manufacturers such as Hisense, Xiaomi, Changhong, Konka, and Sharp have all planned new Mini LED backlight TV products in 2021. 2021 will be the first year of the popularization of Mini LED backlight TVs, and Mini LED backlight TVs are catching up with OLED products.

Big struggle: Mini LED backlight TV products have different strategies

At present, the high-end TV market mainly has two camps: QLED TV and OLED TV. The main players in the QLED TV camp are TCL Electronics and Samsung Electronics; there are many members in the OLED TV camp, with core members including Skyworth, LG Electronics, and Sony.

Although all TV manufacturers are actively embracing Mini LED backlight TVs, different TV manufacturers have slightly different product positioning and market strategies for Mini LED backlight TVs. The QLED TV camp is not bound by OLED TVs. It will introduce Mini LED backlights more radically and fully upgrade QLED TVs to counter the OLED TV camp. For example, the aforementioned Samsung Neo QLED TV and TCL's OD ZeroTM Mini-LED TV. Some analysts believe that members of the QLED TV camp are using Mini LED backlights to suppress the OLED TV market, and higher-cost OLED TVs will be suppressed.

The members of the OLED TV camp have made up for the lack of OLED TVs by adding Mini LED backlit TVs of different sizes from OLED TVs, such as the Q70 series of Skyworth MiniLED backlit TVs and the QNED90 series that LG plans to release, both in size 75 inches and 86. inch. This approach further improves the high-end 4K TV product line, and to a certain extent eliminates the impact of the QLED TV camp on OLED TVs.

In addition, in the Mini LED field, there are also radical manufacturers that skipped Mini LED backlight and directly launched Mini LED TVs. For example, Samsung, Sony, Konka, etc. have launched Mini LED TVs, and Samsung will also launch Mini LED and Micro LED TVs in multiple sizes this year.

In fact, behind the hard struggle of manufacturers in all major camps is the fact that OLED TVs are threatened by Mini LED backlight TVs. Some analysts believe that Mini LED-backlit TVs have further improved the contrast ratio. If the quantum dot film is added, the color gamut value can be increased. Its picture quality continues to approach OLED TVs, and even surpasses OLED TVs in color gamut and brightness. At the same time, the potential for OLED TVs to drop in costs is greater, and the fact that Mini LED-backlit TVs will continue to impact the OLED TV market is irreversible.
